In the wake of its impressive success in some product categories, the residential efficiency program industry is broadening its focus to include consumer behavior as well as product efficiency. Programs are seeking to get closer to consumers, positioning themselves as advisors on home energy use; in addition to traditional incentives, many are reaching out to residents through online marketplaces, consumer engagement through connected devices, and promotion of efficient products’ nonenergy benefits. Other trends include growth of upstream and midstream program strategies, a strong last push of LED lighting, and the spread of heat pump technology across several product categories.
New CEE residential program summaries for 2017, which reveal the residential program industry landscape using data gathered from over a hundred CEE member programs, chart all these industry trends. The in-depth and wide-ranging information compiled by CEE, which includes details on the design, duration, reach, and outcomes of each program, allows administrators, industry partners, and other stakeholders to make reliable assessments of the program industry’s current state and its emerging currents.

The program summaries also demonstrate the ways that administrators are finding value in putting CEE initiatives into effect, multiplying individual program efforts to achieve market transformation. While serving as a current snapshot of the industry, the 2017 program summaries allow efficiency programs and other efficiency stakeholders to watch the spread of initiative participation around the US and Canada.
