ENERGY STAR® Recognizes Canadian Members

Hydro Quebec, winner of Award for Sustained ExcellenceCEE Board member, John Cockburn, served as master of ceremonies at the Canadian ENERGY STAR® Recognition Awards Presentations on May 25, 2009. CEE member BC Hydro received the award for Provincial Utility of the Year and Hydro-Québec was recognized for Sustained Excellence.

Hydro-Québec gained recognition for its work at the forefront of energy efficiency and its continued excellence after five previous awards. In particular, the ENERGY WISE Home Diagnostic program was identified as the heart of its market transformation programs. Since 2003, the ENERGY WISE Home Diagnostic program has mentioned ENERGY STAR 1.4 million times in its recommendations. Our congratulations go out to our friends at Hydro-Québec!

BC Hydro works hard to promote ENERGY STAR in five major programs delivered by the Power Smart initiative. The five programs are:

BC Hydro, winner of Provincial Utility of the Year

  • ENERGY STAR Appliance Rebate Program
  • ENERGY STAR Lighting Program
  • ENERGY STAR Windows Program
  • Holiday LED Lighting Program
  • Power Smart New Home Program

BC Hydro won the award for its commitment to and participation in the ENERGY STAR program. It has won seven awards, one for every year ENERGY STAR has recognized superior efforts. Good work is happening in British Columbia!

"I congratulate this year's winners for their creativity, innovation and leadership in helping to strengthen and expand the ENERGY STAR program in Canada," said Mark Warawa, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of the Environment, on behalf of the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Natural Resources. "These companies are advancing our economy by promoting and developing new energy efficient technologies, which will improve Canada now and in the future." He went on to praise the winners of the 2009 ENERGY STAR Market Transformation Awards for their creativity, innovation, and leadership in helping to strengthen and expand the ENERGY STAR program in Canada.

ENERGY STAR LogoLondon Hydro, who is not a CEE member, but who has participated in some of our residential efforts, received an award for Regional Utility of the Year. The program for which it was recognized improved market penetration of ENERGY STAR qualified GU-24 base lighting fixtures in multiple unit residential buildings. London Hydro made ENERGY STAR qualified CFLs available to more than 66,000 residents of these units. All their programs are tied together in some fashion in order to leverage the exposure each receives.

Other recipients included Whirlpool Canada, Sears Canada, Modern Windows, JELD-WEN Windows and Doors, One Change, BAZZ Inc., and the British Columbia Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources.

Awards are given for innovation, leadership, and forward thinking efforts to strengthen and expand the ENERGY STAR program in Canada.
