Gas Technology Institute and Consortium for Energy Efficiency Work Together To Advance Gas Energy Efficiency

Boston, MA (August 21, 2009)—Gas Technology Institute (GTI) and the Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE) have signed a memorandum of understanding that provides a mechanism for the two organizations to collaborate regarding the development, introduction, and market adoption of new, high efficiency natural gas equipment and appliances throughout the United States and Canada.

GTI performs research on energy supply, delivery, and new natural gas technologies—providing practical solutions for lowering energy consumption and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. CEE works together with energy efficiency program administrators on broad initiatives to accelerate market introduction and acceptance of high efficiency products and services.

CEE can identify technological or analytical gaps facing program designers, helping GTI prioritize research activities in the energy efficiency area. Based on the results of these research, testing, and demonstration activities, GTI can provide insight to CEE that may influence how energy efficiency programs are structured. “During this time of unprecedented attention on energy efficiency, the memorandum of understanding strategically links our respective organizations in mutually beneficial ways, and has the potential to enhance energy efficiency for the benefit of society,” stated Ed Wisniewski, deputy director, CEE.

Gas heating rooftop packaged air conditioners (PACs) have been identified by each organization as an opportunity for development of energy efficient equipment that could provide significant savings if technical and market barriers can be overcome. GTI and CEE will address this area together as their initial joint work effort.

CEE will host a workshop with efficiency programs, manufacturers, and GTI in conjunction with its Annual Industry Partners Meeting. Representatives of the commercial HVAC industry will come together with energy efficiency program managers to discuss the challenges and potential paths forward for gas PACs. The workshop aim is to understand the value of desired technical solutions for particular market applications, and highlight areas for concentrated research, product development, and potential program development.

Notes Paul Armstrong, Director of Business Development at GTI, “The advancement of condensing gas PACs is a great opportunity for both GTI and CEE to leverage the others’ expertise for public benefit. We each have ongoing efforts in this area, and both organizations individually have been looking to better define the market opportunity and associated net energy savings. Working together, we can streamline efforts and minimize redundancy. Pairing CEE expertise in consensus building and efficiency program design with GTI research and development capabilities will provide a complementary suite of skills to advance the organizations’ mutual goals more effectively.”

Other common interests and potential joint projects include researching the in-field performance of tankless water heaters, improving performance of commercial kitchen equipment, and exploring industrial applications, such as advanced boilers and advanced heat recovery systems.

“As gas programs continue to explore savings potential in different areas, it’s essential that CEE members keep apprised of current research,” states CEE Senior Program Manager Kara Rodgers. The connection with GTI will help the CEE Gas Committee identify cutting edge opportunities.”

About CEE

CEE is a consortium of efficiency program administrators from across the United States and Canada who work together on common approaches to advancing efficiency. Through joining forces, the individual efficiency programs of CEE are able to partner not only with each other, but with other industries, trade associations, and government agencies. By working together at CEE, administrators leverage the effect of their funding dollars, exchange information on effective practices and, by doing so, achieve greater energy efficiency for the public good.

About GTI

GTI is a leading research, development and training organization that has been addressing the nation’s energy and environmental challenges by developing technology-based solutions for consumers, industry, and government for more than 65 years.
