ENERGY STAR® for Traffic Signals
ENERGY STAR finalized its specification for traffic signals in the Fall of 2000. Traffic signals meeting this specification are eligible for the ENERGY STAR label.
At this time, only LED technology meets the energy requirements of the ENERGY STAR specification. Thus only LED traffic signals qualify for the ENERGY STAR label and the specification includes terms specific to LED signals. ENERGY STAR, however, is open to any other technology that would qualify.
Traffic signals that use LEDs consume 80-90 percent less energy and generally last 5-10 years, compared to just a year for a comparable incandescent light signal.

The label specification was developed with comments from members, industry and LED purchasers. The specification is based on the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) specification, with an added maximum energy-usage component.
